I tell a fair amount of my clients who are parents this. Let me explain why I say that parents can often be hypnotists.
Children are wonderful at suggestion. The younger they are—generally speaking—the more active their imagination is and the less critical their thought processes are, therefore they are wonderful at following suggestion. After all that is what hypnosis is; following suggestion.
As a parent myself I am now well versed in kissing better a bump or graze—and it works! Distress levels drop off, tears dry and normality is restored very quickly. This is hypnosis! in the mind of the child the pain has been reduced or removed completely. Why? Because they believe is that is what has happened! A true suggestion for anaesthesia or analgesia has been taken on board without question. Hypnotherapy has occurred.
A very talented hypnotist that I know of redefined hypnosis, when concerned with therapy in particular as “following suggestions for a meaningful outcome”. This is the angle of approach that I myself take. As a hypnotherapist I deliver suggestions with an eye for a meaningful outcome.
Parents do this when they “kiss it better” and the effect is almost always immediate. Try the same thing with a teenage or an adult and you will get nothing but a scornful look or a word in your ear from the authorities. Kids take time and years to develop their critical faculties that, although they do them a lot of good when tackling the pit-falls of life—they provide a stumbling block for change when it’s needed and wanted by the conscious mind.
If you would like to find out more I’d be happy to talk to you about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I can usually be found in the Halifax area where my office is based but welcome in clients from far and wide.
